Ceres-Negros bowed to an in-form Yangon United 1-2 in the Preliminary Stage 2 match of the AFC Champions League last February 6, 2018 at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod. Goals from Vinicius Miller and Khaun Tet Soe were the difference while Stephan Schrock was the lone goalscorer for the home squad.
The visitors pressed early in the match which pushed Roland Muller to work early in the first ten minutes. Ceres-Negros grew their influence into the game but United turned the game around near the half hour mark.
The Myanmar champions were awarded an indirect free kick a yard inside the box which Miller converted to a goal in the 28th minute. The home squad started to pile on the pressure with plenty of shots including one from Curt Dizon but goalkeeper Kyaw Hzin Htet was resolute in stopping the home attack.
The Busmen finally broke the ice in the 44th minute when Stephan Schrock cleverly back heeled a Martin Steuble delivery which went over the keeper and into the back of the net to make it 1-1. Ceres almost took the lead but the reverse ball from Omid Nazari had too much pace for Dizon to tap-in.
The second half saw the Philippine squad producing a couple of chances in the half. A foul on Schrock near the edge of the box gifted a free kick to to Ceres but Miguel Tanton’s free kick was over the top corner. Debutante Alvaro Silva had a clear opportunity but his attempt was off target.
Yangon United retook the lead against the run of play when Maung Maung Lwin’s deflected cross fell into the lap of Khaun who promptly slotted the ball past Muller for their second goal.
Ceres-Negros fought hard to get good chances into the box but good defending and some bit of luck were on their side. Schrock won the ball well from the wings and delivered the ball to OJ Porteria whose snapshot was saved well by Kyaw in the 68th minute.
Porteria had the golden chance to equalize minutes later after a rebound off a saved Kevin Ingreso strike but his attempt hit the crossbar and bounced out of play in the 72nd.
The Philippine champs piled the pressure in the remaining minutes but the Yangon defense were equally determined to keep the scoreline. Late substitute Bienvenido Maranon almost levelled the match with his trap beating run but his final touch wasn’t enough to poke the ball past the keeper.
The final whistle blew as Yangon went on to claim the victory and progressed into the next stage of AFC Champions League Qualifying. The loss of Ceres-Negros will pit them back in the AFC Cup where they will face Shan United, Becamex Bin Duong, and possibly Persija Jakarta in the group stage.
They will face Shan United in Panaad on February 26.
